Description:
This is a collection of violin concertos by Johann Stamitz, a Bohemian composer and violinist. He was promoted from principal violinist to court music director of the court orchestra in Mannheim, where he nurtured the orchestra and brought together the composers active at the time, earning him respect as the "father of the Mannheim School of Music. He wrote more than 50 symphonies and was instrumental in the development of the sonata form. His two sons, Karl and Anton, also became outstanding composers. Despite Johann Stamitz's achievements, only a few of his violin concertos have been handed down to the present day. Most of them are modeled on the form of Vivaldi's concertos, with the first movement written in ritornello form with a theme in between. Of the three pieces on this album, the most technically challenging is the first movement of No. 2, a gorgeous work full of the broad melodic leaps and heavy notes that Stamitz was known for. The album also includes one symphony. Naxos Japan
