19th century French period Louis Philippe silver leaf mirror having cross hatch etching to the frame, circa 1840s. The tall rectangular shape of the frame is rare with straight corners at the base as well as the shoulders. The inner border features les perles (beading that resembles a strand of pearls) next to the original mercury mirror glass. Artisans used this beading technique as a decorative element on the grandest pieces, as pearls symbolized power and luxury, and only the most wealthy aristocrats could afford them. Red oxidation showing through the beautiful water gilded patina is original to the piece. The unique appearance of antique mirror glass always adds charm and character that is impossible to achieve with new mirror glass. Louis Philippe mirrors are ideal for use in both modern and traditional interiors. Note small crack near base.
