The Bible tells of many kings and queens. Some were good; some not. This 12-part series tells the stories of Saul, David, Solomon, Jezebel, Esther, & many more. The greatest kings and queens were those who sought to honor God.

Kings and Queens Children's Ministry Curriculum Lesson Overview

Lessons 1-4:

Memory Verse:

When God hides a matter, he gets glory. When kings figure out a matter, they get glory.” Proverbs 25:2 (NIRV)

Saul
Scripture: 1 Samuel 15:7-23, The Lord Rejects Saul as King
God had chosen Saul to be the first king over his people, Israel. But Saul did not always follow God's way. In the end, the kingship was taken away from Saul and his descendents because of Saul's disobedience.
Objective: Kids will say “God wants to bless us as we obey Him.”  

David
Scripture: 2 Samuel 9:1-13, David and Mephibosheth
King David honored God in many ways, including the way he treated people. When David heard of Jonathan's disabled son, Mephibosheth, David brought him in and took care of him.  
Objective: Kids will say “I honor God when I help other people.”

Solomon
Scripture: 1 Kings 3:5-15, Solomon Asks God for Wisdom
When David's son, Solomon, became king, God told Solomon that he could ask for anything and he would receive it. Out of everything that Solomon could have asked for, he asked God to give him wisdom. God was impressed with his answer and promised him wealth and success as well. God is the giver of good gifts; we should seek all the good that God has for us.
Objective: Kids will say “God has good gifts for those who seek Him.”

Queen of Sheba
Scripture: 1 Kings 10:1-10, The Queen of Sheba Visits Solomon
The Queen of Sheba had heard many wonderful things about King Solomon. She went to Israel to see for herself. When she saw Solomon's wisdom and riches, she had no doubt that God had blessed him. That day, the queen of Sheba praised and honored God.   
Objective: Kids will say “When others see us live for God, they will see the joy of following Him too.”

Lessons 5-8: 

Memory Verse: 

“You are the God who helps kings win battles. You save your servant David. ” Psalm 144:10a (NIRV)

Ahab & Jezebel
Scripture: 1 Kings 21:1-19, Naboth's Vineyard
King Ahab and Queen Jezebel served only themselves. They dishonored God at every turn. It led them down a terrible road of lies, deceit, and sinfulness. Ahab and Jezebel show us everything wrong with trying only to please ourselves.
Objective: Kids will say “We should strive to please God, not to just please ourselves.”

Jehoshaphat
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 20:2-26, Jehoshaphat Defeats Moab and Ammon
When faced with an attack from a vast army, Jehoshaphat said to God, “we do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.” God gave Jehoshaphat victory, even without having to fight at all. We often don't know what to do in this world, but we should always keep our eyes on God.
Objective: Kids will say “I will keep my eyes on God, even when I don't know what to do.”  

Josiah
Scripture: 2 Kings 22:1-2 & 23:1-3, The Book of Law Found
Josiah was only 12 years old when he became king, but he honored God and served Him with all his might. When the book of Law was discovered hidden away, Josiah had the people recommit themselves to the Lord.
Objective: Kids will say “No matter how old or young we are, we can commit ourselves to God.”

Hezekiah
Scripture: 2 Kings 20:1-11, Hezekiah's Illness
Even a powerful king is not invincible. When King Hezekiah became sick and learned that he was going to die, he turned to God and asked for healing. God listened to Hezekiah's prayer. God is our great protector and healer, and he hears our prayers.
Objective: Kids will say “God hears my prayers, and takes care of me.”

Lessons 9-12: 

Memory Verse: 

“May all kings bow down to him. May all nations serve him.” Psalm 72:11 (NIRV)

Manasseh
Scripture: 2 Chronicles 33:9-16, Manasseh Changes Direction
King Manasseh did many evil things during his reign. Eventually, he saw the errors of his ways and he turned toward God and began to serve Him. The story of Manasseh shows us that it is never too late to turn from our own way and come back to God.  
Objective: Kids will say “Despite the bad things I've done, I can turn back and serve God.”

Esther
Scripture: Esther 4, For Such a Time as This
The book of Esther tells the story of how Esther became queen and acted boldly to save her people. In the middle of the book, her cousin Mordecai expresses the belief that God has placed her in her position of power for that very purpose. God can use each of us where we are, for his great purposes.  
Objective: Kids will say “I will let God use me wherever he places me to serve Him.”  

Herod
Scripture: Matthew 2:13-20, Herod's Jealousy
We know the story of the Magi, who came to visit Jesus, the newborn king. King Herod was jealous when he learned of the birth of a new king. His jealousy sent him into a rage, resulting in the death of many.
Objective: Kids will say “God, please take away my envy and jealousy and replace it with gratitude.”

Jesus
Scripture: John 12:12-15, The Triumphal Entry
The perfect example of a king that honors God is, of course, Jesus. He reigns forever, seated at the right hand of the Father. We honor and serve only one king, the one who came to save us from our sins. Even as Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the people recognized that Jesus was the king sent in the name of the Lord.
Objective: Kids will say “Jesus is my king. I honor and serve Him.”
