Published in 1994, Naked Room (Hadaka no heya) is Sakiko Nomura’s first photobook. The large-format book opens with a soft, grainy image of a young man’s bare chest — out of focus, low in contrast, and quiet in mood. These qualities would later become part of her signature style.
As art critic Shunji Ito said, this is not simply a photograph of a body, but “a photo of a naked room.” Nomura’s images feel less about exposure and more about atmosphere — about space, light, and presence.
Nomura is one of the most important Japanese photographers of her generation. Known for her dark, intimate black-and-white photographs of men, she worked for many years as an assistant to Nobuyoshi Araki before developing her own distinct visual language.
