A charming set of six antique French majolica asparagus plates, stamped Déposé K&G Luneville, dating to the 1890s. These beautifully molded and vividly glazed plates are a celebration of form and function, showcasing three sculpted asparagus spears resting across a pool of rich turquoise glaze. Each plate has a fluted rim and a subtly undulating surface that adds to its tactile appeal. The high-relief design and vibrant glaze are hallmarks of high quality majolica. Ideal for serving, collecting, or diplaying, this colorful set is both functional and decorative. The vivid green and violet tips contrast perfectly with the soft white stalks, creating a striking centerpiece for any spring or summer table. *Sold as a set of 6 plates. Cradle sold separately.
The plates were produced by the renowned Keller & Guérin faïencerie in Lunéville, in northeastern France. Founded in the early 18th century and later purchased by Keller and Guérin in 1892, the factory became a leading name in the French majolica movement, producing finely detailed, whimsical tableware that brought the beauty of nature to the dining experience. Their pieces were highly prized both for their technical quality and for their joyful artistry.
Asparagus plates like these are part of a long European tradition of crafting specialized serveware to highlight beloved ingredients. Asparagus — considered a delicacy, especially in France — was often served during festive spring meals. In the 19th century, elaborate asparagus plates became fashionable, with raised compartments to cradle the tender spears and accompanying wells for sauces like hollandaise or vinaigrette.
