An exceptional and stunning mid-20th century French Louis XVI style five drawer, five door demilune enfilade buffet attributed to the famed Maison Mercier Freres of Paris, circa 1940s. Having a lustrous ebonized semi-gloss lacquered finish, the original thick, moulded and beveled Carrara marble top, and finely chased bronze ormolu mounts and trim, this elegant buffet is a fine example of the high quality workmanship and style of the highly sought after Paris atelier. Each of the five drawers are opulently decorated with bronze trim, the fluted columns flanking the three center drawers feature ormolu mounts, and there are finely chased keyhole escutheons on each drawer. Two interior shelves. Raised on turned toupie feet ending in brass sabots.
Mercier Freres was a distinguished French design studio and furniture manufacturer located in the heart of the Parisian furniture district at 100 Saint-Antoine. It was created in 1828 by André Mercier and closed in 1985. Recognized as one of the leading French design firms, Mercier Freres specialized in styling and customized furniture, and provided many European courts and Eastern royalty, including the Spanish crown and Persian royal family. They exhibited at the Exposition des produits de l'industrie Française in 1844 and 1849, and participated in most of the major international exhibitions of the latter half of the century.
