Exceptional 19th century Louis XIII style buffet de chasse or hunt buffet handcrafted by talented artisans in the Normandy region of old growth French oak, circa 1870s. This handsome French Renaissance buffet features carved gadrooning on the top edge above two carved drawers over two doors with bas relief carvings of game birds. The two intricately detailed doors featuring wild fowl in the field and marsh are solid carved panels done by an expert ébéniste and are flanked by fluted and turned balusters resting on two front bun feet and two back block feet. Found in a lodge near Lyons-la-Forêt, this meticulously carved hunting buffet is a fine example of late Renaissance style furniture, and is perfect for a hunting lodge, ranch, or elegant dining room or study.
Buffets de chasse were found in French hunting lodges and were used to present game after the hunt. Various forms of the hunt were depicted in the furniture, tapestries and paintings over the centuries. The hunt was considered to be a pastime of Royalty and the privileged class.
