A large 19th century French cruche or water pitcher from Provence having an ochre yellow glaze with honey yellow and dark caramel drips, two handles, a spout, and the original lid, circa 1870s. These antique French pitchers were used to keep water chilled in the house or in the fields and were only half glazed because they would have been stored in the ground to cool the water. With the help of the hot Provençal sun, the beautiful warm patina of this large antique water jug developed over time as did the imperfections, which are a testament to its utilitarian history and frequent use. A classic French piece with the original lid, which is very rare to find, making it a very collectible piece. Beautifully decorative, this stunning cruche will add a bit of French Country charm wherever it's used. We have a large selection of antique French pottery.
