This small 19th century French biot is a classic French olive jar with a wonderful pale yellow glazed neck and aged patina. The small village of Biot, located in Provence, has been producing the iconic terracotta pottery since the 16th century. Handcrafted using the ancient technique of rope thrown pottery, these charming jars were used to preserve and transport olive oil. Known as the "king of jars," biot pots make an elegant statement around a pool, in a grouping by the entrance to your home, or in a courtyard.
Because biot pots are glazed only on the neck and rim (to prevent insects from climbing into the oil inside) they are not suitable for overwintering outside in cold climates — except if emptied and covered, or brought inside. Please note that these pots were never intended as planters. You will need to drill a drainage hole or have a custom liner made if you choose to use one as a planter.
