French Louis XIII style coffer or trunk handcrafted in Normandy of solid walnut and finished on both sides having a center panel of a carved diamante flanked by carved and raised galettes. Raised on bun feet, circa 1890s. Coffers and trunks were used to keep all sorts of treasures under lock and key while still functioning as seats, tables, and even beds for children or very small adults. They were the main item of furniture in early French households and it was fairly common to have a coffer in every room. This handsome French trunk has plenty of room to hold blankets, linens, toys, or clothes and will add extra seating to any room.
