NWA 14867 is officially classified as a Mesosiderite stony-iron meteorite, discovered in Eastern Morocco in 2022. Mesosiderites are rare meteorites composed of approximately equal portions of silicate minerals and metallic iron-nickel.
This specimen is from the officially recognized Northwest Africa 14867 (NWA 14867), classified as a Mesosiderite stony-iron meteorite in Meteoritical Bulletin No. 111 (2023), the authoritative database maintained by The Meteoritical Society and the Lunar and Planetary Institute.
This specimen displays a dark brown interior with a mixed silicate-metal matrix. The silicate portion consists primarily of low-Ca and Ca-pyroxene along with calcic plagioclase. Sulfide-metal blebs are present within the pyroxene, while minor phases include silica, FeS, and merrillite.
The metallic component shows natural terrestrial alteration to iron oxides and hydroxides, typical for desert-recovered specimens.
