Elegant and rare vintage sterling silver vesta case hallmarked London 1935 and with the makers mark G&S C Ltd for Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd of Regent St, London. G&SC Ltd were one of Britain's most famous and celebrated luxury silverware manufacturers of their era. It features elegant engine turned decoration in a fine diagonal crosshatch pattern and the retailers name is engraved on the inner rim. This is a rare feature and confirms the case was sold directly from the Regent St store.

Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman at 112 Regent St, London, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd became one of Britain's most prestigious silversmithing companies. Their grand Regent St showroom (see image) attracted the best of Britain's society and by the mid 1880's the company was awarded the Royal Warrant as an official supplier to the British Royal Family. They exhibited at major international exhibitions throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries and merged with the famous Garrard & Co (the Crown Jewellers) in 1952.

Vesta Cases were small portable boxes used to carry vestas (short matches) and were carried by men and women alike. So called after the name of one of the early makers (which was taken from the goddess Vesta, a Roman deity of fire and the hearth), they came into use around the 1830s and were produced extensively between 1890 and 1920.

The vesta case measures 4cm x 4.8cm and is 32g in weight. The lid shuts firmly with a snap and the striker remains sharp and functional with a natural aged patina.

This unique piece of jewellery may have signs of wear due to its history. It is beautifully imperfect and should be treated with love and care. This vesta case is in excellent vintage condition.
