A very handsome and richly carved 19th century walnut Spanish sacristy chest from a small private chapel in the Catalan region near the town of Rupit, circa 1850s, having a straight upper wooden wooden tabletop, slightly protruding over two top drawers above two smaller lower drawers flanked by small locking cabinets, all featuring richly carved floral rosettes and geometric motifs adorned with original large iron pulls. The sides have been decorated with simple rectangular panels of moldings and geometric carvings. Raised on straight block feet. A rustic cabinet with a beautiful dark, rich patina. The narrow depth makes this versatile chest an ideal choice for a foyer, hallway, bedroom or powder room. Will also make a wonderful console or sofa table.
Originating in Spain during the 15th century, sacristy cupboards or chests were quite large, built to fit into a wall of the church sacristy, a room behind or to the side of the altar used for storing sacred ceremonial vessels, ecclesiastical garments, and other sacred objects of worship. Smaller sacristy chests or cabinets like this were usually commissioned by the wealthy for their private chapels.
