A fine 18th century carved French Louis XIII style bureau plat or desk handcrafted of solid oak by skilled Breton artisans, circa 1730s. The rectangular top with a gadrooned beveled edge is fitted with the original green leather writing surface and sits above an intricately carved apron concealing a single drawer with iron pull. This beautifully carved oak desk is raised on four hand-turned double barley twist legs connected through rectangular block joints featuring carved rosettes to an "H" form cross stretcher of the same style, accented with three small finials on each side and a large center finial. The cross stretcher in particular catches all the attention with its shaped and carved finials, creating a sense of balance and harmony. In France, the twisted column or torsade was a major element in furniture design during the reign of King Louis XIII. Placed anywhere in a home, from a foyer to a bedroom or living room, this lovely French desk will bring a refined touch to any decor. It's a fine showcase of craftsmanship, fully finished on all sides, with a wonderful patina.
