Léa Stein is a French artist known for her compressed plastic brooches and bracelets. Often hailed as “the most remarkable and innovative plastic jewelry designer of the 20th century,” Lea began making jewelry in 1969.
In the mid-1960s she started making brooches in plastics. She and her husband created a method to create layers from very thin sheets of cellulose acetate. The layers were then baked and cut into shapes. This method also enabled her to incorporate substances into the plastics.
Making these unique plastic brooches was a time-consuming process, the production of 1 brooch took no less than 6 months!
